The energy transition represents one of the most significant global shifts of our time—transforming how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed to create a lower-carbon future. This is a unique opportunity to be part of that change and contribute to building more sustainable, resilient energy systems.
Due to continued growth, new project wins, and expanding client relationships, we are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join Stantec’s Energy & Resources team. Ideally based in Redditch, Newcastle or Manchester you will play a key role within our Waste and Generation team, supporting a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge energy projects.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will work across a wide range of technologies and projects, including Energy from Waste (EfW) plants, district heating systems, gasification, hydrogen generation, and biogas production schemes.
You will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle—from early-stage optioneering and feasibility studies through to detailed design and installation support. This will include undertaking site surveys and investigations, developing technical solutions, and contributing to project-wide design deliverables.
Working collaboratively with clients, partners, and multidisciplinary teams, you will help deliver integrated engineering solutions that meet both technical and commercial objectives. You will also contribute to the development of design outputs such as general arrangement drawings, 3D models, and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
A strong focus on health, safety, and environmental (HSE) responsibilities is embedded in this role, with an emphasis on fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability across all project activities.
Your Impact
In this role, you will contribute directly to the delivery of mechanical engineering solutions that enable modern, sustainable energy infrastructure. Your involvement across diverse technologies—from hydrogen to EfW—will support the transition to lower-carbon energy systems and help clients meet evolving regulatory and environmental expectations.
By supporting projects from concept through to construction, you will help ensure that engineering solutions are practical, efficient, and aligned with overall project goals. Your ability to develop clear technical specifications and assess vendor designs will play a key role in maintaining quality and consistency across project delivery.
Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help drive collaboration and innovation, ensuring that mechanical designs integrate seamlessly with wider engineering solutions. Through your commitment to HSE best practice and continuous improvement, you will also contribute to creating safer, more efficient project environments.
Ultimately, your work will help deliver impactful projects that support the future of sustainable energy while reinforcing Stantec’s reputation for technical excellence and client-focused delivery.
About You
You are a motivated Mechanical Engineer with a strong technical foundation and a keen interest in the energy or process plant sectors. You are comfortable working across multiple technologies and project stages, and you bring a collaborative and proactive approach to your work.
You will bring:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience within the energy, power, or process plant sectors
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership (preferred)
- Experience producing technical specifications, schedules, and reports across a range of technologies (e.g. steam systems, piping, hydrogen, biomass, EfW plants)
- Familiarity with collaborative design outputs such as General Arrangement drawings, 3D models, and P&IDs
- Experience or interest in developing scoping documentation, construction packages, and assessing vendor designs
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to clients and colleagues
- A commitment to HSE principles and a proactive approach to risk management
Most importantly, you will embody a client-focused mindset, collaborating effectively with others and contributing to a culture of service excellence, innovation, and designing with community in mind.
